Meeting Reminders & Upcoming Events

The School Committee will interview four finalists on Tuesday, January 22nd at the Capuano Early Childhood Center, 150 Glen Street starting at 6:30pm.   Prior to the interviews, the School Committee will be accepting any public comments on the vacant position. Hopefully they will make a final decision on who will be the Ward One School Committee representative that night.

Suggested questions to be asked of the candidates are welcome. These may be submitted prior to the hearing by emailing School Committee Chair Mary Jo Rossetti mrossetti@
k12.somerville.ma.us. Suggested questions will also be accepted the evening of the interviews.
The 4 finalist for the vacant Ward 1 School Committee seat are:

The Licensing Commission will be having a public hearing Wednesday, January 23rd at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland Street starting at 6pm.  On the agenda that evening will be the incident that happened on December 17th at the Holiday Inn.

Public Skating Hours

The Somerville Recreation Department announces the winter 2012-13 public ice skating schedule, which includes increased hours for public skating at two rinks.  Located at 570 Somerville Avenue, the Veteran’s Memorial Hockey Rink and a second, newly-opened and yet-to-be-named rink include free public skating Monday through Sunday beginning this month.

Main Rink:
·         Mondays, Fridays, noon – 2:00pm:  Free Public Skating
·         Wednesdays, noon – 2:00pm and 3:45 – 5:00pm:  Free Public Skating
·         Saturdays:  public skating hours will be posted at www.somervillerec.com on a weekly basis

Rink 2:
·         Mondays, 4:30-5:20pm:  Somerville Skating Academy ($110 per child for 7 weeks)
·         Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:45-5:15pm:  Free Public Skating
·         Saturdays:  skating hours will be posted at www.somervillerec.com on a weekly basis
·         Sundays, 2:00 – 4:00pm:  Free Public Skating

 Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Somerville Office of Commissions and the Somerville Public Schools announce the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration event, entitled, “Equality Through Access,” to be held on Monday, January 21st in accordance with national MLK Day remembrance.  The 2013 event will be held at the Somerville Theatre from 11am – 1pm, and will include a keynote speech by Lorraine Cordeiro, Assistant Professor and Family Research Scholar at UMass/Amherst as well as live music, readings from Somerville student essays in response to the 2013 theme “Equality Through Access,” and an award presentation to community members who exemplify MLK’s legacy in the Somerville community.  The event is free and open to the public. 

Additionally this year, the City of Somerville and MLK Jr. Day Committee are sponsoring a “Day of Service,” which will include a Red Cross Blood Drive and canned food drive.  The American Red Cross mobile unit will be stationed outside of the Somerville Theatre from 11:00am to 4:00pm.  To make an appointment, please call 1-800-733-RED-CROSS, or visit redcrossblood.org.  Donations of canned and non-perishable food will be accepted at the event, to support local food pantries.
