FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone Endorses Matt McLaughlin in Ward 1 Alderman Race

East Somerville – October 7, 2013 – In a development that solidifies Matt McLaughlin’s frontrunner position in the Ward 1 Alderman Race, Mayor Joe Curtatone endorsed the Army veteran and lifelong community activist’s candidacy for office.

Mayor Curtatone says that he made the decision to endorse Mr. McLaughlin’s run due to Matt’s independent leadership in park development, youth programs, and other issues in Somerville over the years. “Since I first met Matt when he played football at Somerville High School, I have had the chance to work with him on many projects of importance to the City,” said the Mayor and assistant football coach. “I look forward to working with him when he serves on the Board of Aldermen.”

Mayor Curtatone says that at their core, he and McLaughlin share a vision for what defines public service. “My experience working with Matt has shown me that above all else he is dedicated to the people of Somerville, and will always do what he thinks is right for his neighbors and constituents,“ he said.

Mayor Curtatone’s endorsement is the most recent in a string of other important shows of support. In a demonstration of McLaughlin’s broad appeal, he has received the endorsement of current Ward 1 Alderman Maureen Bastardi, Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz, the Somerville Journal, the Progressive Democrats of Somerville and over ten labor union organizations.

Matt is running for the Ward 1 Alderman seat, and is competing against local businessman Elio LoRusso. In the September 24 preliminary election, McLaughlin, who was considered a dark horse candidate, earned 504 out of 1,240 votes that were cast. This represented a major victory over his two opponents; LoRusso came in a distant second in the race with 369 votes, and only narrowly defeated incumbent Alderman Maureen Bastardi, who earned 364 votes.
